Rights and Responsibility

Some people are concious about their rights and responsibilities, but part of them are doing their responsibilities.
It might sound as a cliche. You might have heard it many times since you were a child.
But, I just realized it hurting me much especially when I have to face some of my friends doing it.
What differs you as part or not the part of the institution is your right and responsibility. However, in this case, the institution was formed as to ordering the rights of the people.
It was a free good when you wanted. But rethink it again, it’s not. You have to pay it with responsibility.
On the other side, some others opted not to be part of the institution because they wanted to get the goods freely, without responsibility. I don’t hate them, but I just assume them as a “rights taker”.
This institution ask for responsibility in aiming a sustainable “development” of the human resources. Those who have taken their rights are obliged to share their experiences and best practices to the rest.

Ok, to this extend, you can still see it as something cliche or common. But, let’s see it deeper.
In my case, the “rights” or the “priviledge” is coming from the “responsibility” to represent your school’s or your institution’s or even your country’s name. You have the right to bring it, but you need to be CONCIOUS that it means more than gaining your rights. The demand might not be directly to you, but you should think how will the society where you wanna go, perceive you(r school, institution, or even country).
You play it bad, then the people will say that your school/institution/country is as dumb as you are. In the eyes of the third party, “Where you’re belong to is you; You are where you’re belong to”.

You criticise the government of not acknowledging illegal workers. And you criticise or at least concious what will follow you if you don’t go in a legal way. When you get sick, when you get trouble, and when your parents seek you, the institution you attached with will be sued.

Think it much, before you pass the line!

When Going Abroad Becomes Easier

What are you going to do?

I’m surely wanna go to any places that I want. I wanna have 1-2 weeks leisure time and study there.

Why is it so?
1. Cheaper transportation (air plane tickets are now so crazy lowering their prices)
2. More middle-upper class (economic development, more salary)
3. Different pear group (one of the biggest pushing factor is your friends or families are going abroad for vacation)
4. Visa free countries (for some region, there’s an agreement to ease visa requirement; visa on arrival)
5. More choices of flights; more flight companies (you can compare the prices and find the cheapest way to go to a certain country)
6. Some cyber sites where backpackers meet and arrange their trip with the other backpackers abroad (you can reduce the cost of accommodation by having a nap in your friends’ place via the cyber sites community)
7. More international conferences, meetings, competitions, courses or events (both for youth, expert, etc.) are held in this world (give you more chance to get two benefit in a single trip; make easier to get visa with an exact purpose)

How does it affect some things?
1. More people can enjoy the beauty of the world (more chance for middle-low class, and middle class to go abroad with less money)
2. Give more chance to spend money
3. More people wanted to pay less and go abroad
4. Equality of opportunity is somehow an issue in giving a chance for students to study abroad
5. Going abroad for people with geographical proximity might not be a big deal. But, it’s a big deal for people under poverty, or people with lack of opportunities
6. Giving more chance for human trafficking operation
7. More chances for corrupt politicians or criminals to go abroad (hold much money, can fly with business class which doesn’t need to be in a rush to order a ticket (spontaneous))
8. Using “conference, meeting, or international event” as the reason to go abroad without really taking into account the significant of the event or using it as a step stone to gain support (from parents, school, or any other parties)

You might think I write it to judge a person or picture a certain case. But, it’s what I really feel, hear, or even do.

Dialogical Education - quoted from a journal

Freire’s  theories of education are somewhat compatible with a post development frame work wherein he positions the learner as knower, considers education as a dialogical  process between people, and theorizes education in a context of oppression. Freire criticizes the banking model of education and believes that a top-down flow of information from teacher to student perpetuates oppression. He argues that when students are expected to uncritically accept given information as truth, the students’ opportunity for freedom is ultimately undermined. Freire, therefore, advocates a “problem-posing” approach to  education  where  students  and teachers work collaboratively to create knowledge through meaningful dialogue, leading to an awakening of critical consciousness  and, thus, emancipation. Freire insists, and I agree, that teaching cannot be a top-down imposition and must be of relevance to the learner.” (page 12)

“Freire (1970/2000) uses the term dialogical education in arguing for a educational process where individual thought is expressed, valued, and negotiated through communication.” (page 12)

“Because knowledge is  socially  constructed,  students  must be engaged and be a part  of the meaning-making  process,  a process  similar  to  post-development theory, in  that  both  value and  insist  on recognition  of local  knowings (Nzomo, 1995;  Parpart,  1995).” (page 13)

We are rich! YES WE ARE! So, what?

I believe most of Indonesian know how rich our country is. But do we know how to use it? do we know how to make it valuable? Most of us is in this stage: We know but we do not understand how to use it and how to make it valuable. We still (only) criticise how the government utilise the resources. We mostly whinny when we do not get the benefit from the extracted profit.

Some of us realise that we are being colonized in a new way. TV station talks on how we are slaved in our own land. But few of us know a good strategy to extract the resources. Part of this few people do not have the access to implement their strategy or sound their strategy to the government. It makes us rarely heard good news about development, no?

I, my self, have not done huge thing for this nation. I only know the “concepts” and “facts” but have had the resources to work it out. Well, I will, some day when I have got sufficient power (strong willingness and idea) and resources. May it comes soon. I BELIEVE YOU ALREADY HAVE IT NOW! SO, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? GO AHEAD!
